Governor Lamont and Connecticut Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona presented an online webinar focused on the state's plan to re-open schools on Thursday, July 9th. Over 15,000 tuned in to hear about the current framework and citizens and educators ask for details.
The framework they announced with a 50 page slide deck calls for school districts, referred to as Local Educational Agencies, or LEAs, to develop specific plans for opening, and provides guidelines for approaching the re-opening. Chief among these is attempting to create small groups of students to minimize exposure. Parents participating in the webinar pointed out that groups on a school bus would not be the same within a classroom.
There are many details still to be worked out, including methods for notification of infections, case thresholds to switch back to distance learning and accommodations for special needs students.
